NON+ X Berber Budapest

For the photoshoot of our latest NEON collection , we were looking for special accessories that would match our bright, extra summery styles in terms of color, mood, and style. We have been following Berber Budapest rugs on Instagram for a long time, and now we finally had the opportunity to meet Bori, the founder of the brand, in person.

Bori Körösényi, originally an economist, was introduced to the world of Berber rugs through a weaving project: he was looking for inspiration for designing a knotted rug and came across the neon 'drawn' abstract Azilal rugs on a raw wool base. He was impressed by the amazing sense of proportion with the colors, the strong wool texture of the rugs and the contrast that such extravagant, modern objects are created in the Berber communities of the Atlas Mountains, almost isolated from the world. This became such a love that it has lasted ever since, Bori has gathered a serious domestic following for hand-knotted Berber rugs over the past year and a half.

Hand knotting is one of the most time-consuming forms of weaving. The weaver knots each knot individually, and then after each knot row comes one or two unloosening rows. The time to complete the work depends primarily on the number of knots per m2, which also depends on the density of the weaving, the thickness of the yarn, the type of knot, and the ratio of knot rows to unloosening rows. It is no coincidence that large rugs are often woven by several women at the same time, working side by side in parallel. The time to complete a rug can still be measured in weeks, but more likely in months.

The carpets of Berber Budapest come from the Berber tribes living in the Moroccan part of the Atlas Mountains. The Moroccan tribal culture is extremely diverse, many different Berber tribes live in the Atlas ranges, to which countless different types of carpets can be linked. Most types come from a geographically well-defined area, and their names often coincide with the name of their place of origin. The current offer of Berber Budapest focuses primarily on Beni Ourain, Azilal, Boujaad and Boucherouite carpets, in a completely subjective selection. The carpets are most often made of wool by hand weaving, and in most cases by hand knotting. Each tribe in the Atlas Mountains has its own weaving tradition, the characteristic set of colors and patterns, and knotting technique are passed down within the family from generation to generation. In addition to the common stylistic features, each carpet is completely unique. For Berber women, weaving is a means of self-expression, and each carpet is the imprint of the individuality, desires and life path of the weaver.

If you liked Berber Budapest's fantastic collection, be sure to visit the brand's showroom, because the pieces are even more irresistible in person, which is no wonder, since their touch is at least as pleasant as their wonderful colors and unique patterns!

You can find the Berber Budapest showroom in the Art Quarter Budapest, at 1222 Nagytétényi út 48-50. Since there are no fixed opening hours, please contact Bori before visiting by calling +36301903441, emailing hello@berberbudapest.com , or sending an Instagram or Facebook message .
